Our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is a rich and engaging learning experience that nurtures the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—while reflecting the values of our Catholic faith. Through hands-on experiences in both the garden and kitchen, students develop practical life skills, deepen their understanding of sustainability, and grow in their appreciation of God’s creation.
Students participate in the full cycle of food production, from preparing soil and planting seeds to harvesting fresh produce and creating simple, nutritious meals. This process fosters responsibility, patience, and teamwork, while building an understanding of where food comes from and the importance of caring for the environment.
Grounded in Catholic Social Teaching, the program promotes stewardship of the Earth, gratitude for the gifts we have been given, and a commitment to sharing with others. Students are encouraged to reflect on how their actions contribute to the wellbeing of the community, particularly those in need.
The Kitchen Garden provides meaningful opportunities to connect learning across curriculum areas, including Science, Health, Mathematics, and Literacy, in a purposeful and engaging way. It also supports student wellbeing by promoting mindfulness, confidence, and a sense of achievement.
Students from Prep to Year 6 participate in a term of Kitchen Garden learning each year. Gardening and kitchen sessions are carefully structured and staggered to ensure the safe and effective use of tools and equipment. Students work towards achieving practical milestones such as wheelbarrow and knife licences, building confidence and independence.
Kitchen experiences develop essential life skills, including measuring ingredients, using mathematical language, and practising safe food preparation. These experiences encourage healthy food choices while fostering an ecologically aware and responsible mindset.
Above all, the program inspires students to work collaboratively, think creatively, and develop a lifelong respect for healthy living and sustainable practices.
